eSIM Not Working? 7 Common Issues and How to Fix Them

TrafelFi team

Meta description: Activated your eSIM but can't connect? Here are the 7 most common eSIM problems travelers face — and exactly how to fix them fast.

You've landed at the airport, activated your eSIM, and… nothing. No signal. No data. Don't panic — most eSIM issues are quick to fix once you know where to look. Here are the 7 most common problems and how to solve them.

1. eSIM Is Installed But Shows "No Service"

Why it happens: Your phone may not have switched to the correct eSIM profile, or the plan hasn't activated yet.

Fix:

  • Go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → SIM and make sure your TravelFi eSIM is selected for data.
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force a network refresh.
  • Wait up to 10 minutes after activation — some plans take a moment to go live.

2. Data Is On But Nothing Loads

Why it happens: Data roaming is disabled, or the APN settings are incorrect.

Fix:

  • Enable Data Roaming in your mobile settings (this is required for eSIM plans abroad).
  • Check that your APN settings match those provided in your TravelFi activation email.
  • On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Data Roaming → ON.

3. QR Code Won't Scan

Why it happens: The camera can't read the code, or the eSIM has already been installed on another device.

Fix:

  • Use your phone's native camera app, not a third-party scanner.
  • Make sure you're scanning in good lighting.
  • Note: each QR code can only be used once and on one device. If you've already scanned it, contact support for a replacement.

4. eSIM Disappeared After a Phone Reset or iOS/Android Update

Why it happens: Factory resets and some OS updates can wipe installed eSIM profiles.

Fix:

  • Reinstall the eSIM using your original QR code (if unused) or request a re-issue from TravelFi support.
  • Tip: Always back up your eSIM details before resetting your phone.

5. Can't Make or Receive Calls

Why it happens: TravelFi eSIM plans are data-only. Calls and SMS are not included.

Fix:

  • Use data-based calling apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Google Meet for voice calls.
  • Keep your home SIM active in the second SIM slot for calls while using TravelFi for data.

6. eSIM Works in Some Areas But Not Others

Why it happens: Coverage varies by region and local network partner.

Fix:

  • Check the coverage map for your destination on the TravelFi website.
  • Manually select a different local network: Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Network Selection → Manual.
  • In remote areas, coverage gaps are normal — switch to a local Wi-Fi hotspot when available.

7. Phone Says "eSIM Not Supported"

Why it happens: Not all devices support eSIM, and some carrier-locked phones block eSIM functionality.

Fix:

  • Check if your device is eSIM-compatible (most iPhones from XS onwards and many Android flagships are).
  • If your phone is carrier-locked, contact your home carrier to unlock it before using an eSIM.
  • Visit our Device Compatibility Guide to confirm your model is supported.
