Canada Travel eSIM vs Local Prepaid Plans: Which Costs Less?
Visiting Canada for a few days or a couple of weeks? A small travel eSIM package can cost less upfront than buying a full month of local mobile service. Staying for several months, using lots of data, or needing a Canadian phone number? A local prepaid plan may be the better fit.
This guide compares TravelFi’s Canada data eSIMs with selected publicly advertised Canadian prepaid plans. The useful question is not simply “Which has the cheapest gigabyte?” It is “What will I actually pay for the data and features I need during my trip?”
Prices checked October 22, 2026. TravelFi prices below are in USD; Canadian carrier prices are in CAD. CAD equivalents use an illustrative conversion of US$1 = C$1.40, not a guaranteed exchange rate. Taxes, payment-card conversion fees, and any SIM or activation charges are excluded. Offers, eligibility and regional availability can change; confirm the final checkout total.
Quick answer: which option suits your Canada trip?
- Short visit, light data use: Start with a TravelFi fixed-data eSIM. Paying for a small allowance can keep the total cost low even if its validity is longer than your stay.
- Longer stay or heavy data use: Compare Canadian prepaid plans. Larger recurring allowances can offer better value, especially with included calls and texts.
- Need a Canadian number: Choose a local voice-and-text plan. The TravelFi plans compared here are data-only.
- Arriving before choosing a long-term plan: A small TravelFi package can cover your first few days while you compare local options.
Not sure how much data to buy? Use our Travel Data Usage Calculator to estimate your needs for maps, messaging, social media, video calls and streaming, then choose a total-data package or daily allowance that fits your trip.
Our advantages: ready when you land
Buy and install your TravelFi eSIM before departure using a stable internet connection. With a compatible, unlocked phone and the correct settings, you can connect to a supported Canadian network after landing—without visiting an airport SIM kiosk, swapping a physical SIM, or waiting for a shop to open.
- Arrange your data before your flight: Choose your package and install the eSIM while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
- Head straight to your next stop: Once connected, open your hotel address, transport app, messages or booking confirmations instead of looking for a SIM counter.
- Choose the allowance for your trip: Pick a small fixed-data package or a daily high-speed allowance for the number of days you need.
- Keep your usual number on a compatible dual-SIM phone: Use TravelFi for mobile data while keeping your home line available if needed. Your home carrier’s charges still apply to that line.
For the Canada Unlimited Data eSIM, validity starts on its first supported network connection in Canada. Select it as your mobile-data line and enable data roaming for that line as instructed. Connection depends on coverage, device compatibility and correct setup. Some local Canadian carriers also offer eSIM activation; TravelFi’s advantage is having your travel data arranged before arrival.

TravelFi Canada eSIM prices for short visits
These are selected standard fixed-data variants from our Canada eSIM product, rather than Premium variants. The allowance is the total data for the package, not a daily allowance.
| Total data | Validity | Price, USD | Illustrative CAD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | US$2.61 | C$3.65 |
| 3 GB | 15 days | US$5.88 | C$8.23 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | US$6.00 | C$8.40 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | US$8.95 | C$12.53 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | US$15.25 | C$21.35 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | US$25.60 | C$35.84 |
These plans provide mobile data for maps, bookings, browsing and internet calling apps. They do not include a Canadian mobile number, regular cellular calls, or standard SMS. The product currently lists hotspot support and Rogers Wireless coverage up to 5G; actual service depends on your selected plan, device, location and network conditions.

How local Canadian prepaid plans compare
The following examples show why a local plan can be attractive when you need a phone number or more data. This is a selected comparison, not an exhaustive ranking of every Canadian offer. Public Mobile’s page resolved to its BC regional view during our check; Lucky Mobile displayed Ontario. Check your intended province before buying.
| Provider | Advertised price, CAD | Data | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Mobile | C$22/month | 1 GB | 4G tier; includes unlimited talk and text |
| Public Mobile | C$24/month | 5 GB | 4G tier; includes unlimited talk and text |
| Public Mobile | C$30/month | 35 GB | 4G tier; includes unlimited talk and text |
| Lucky Mobile | C$25/month | 4 GB, or 5 GB with Automatic Top-Up | New customers; Canada-wide calls and texts included |
| Koodo Prepaid | C$25 per 30 days | 4 GB, or 5 GB with Automatic Top-Up | 4G data and Canada-wide calling |
| chatr | C$35/month | 30 GB with Auto-Pay | Advertised for new activations; confirm full plan terms |
Compare the full amount due at activation, rather than dividing a monthly fee by the number of days you will visit. Also check renewal settings. Bonus data may depend on automatic payments. Local carriers can offer digital eSIM activation too: convenience is not exclusive to travel eSIM providers. Lucky Mobile listed a free eSIM and a C$10 physical SIM; Koodo advertised a limited-time free prepaid eSIM.
Three practical cost comparisons
A one-week visit with 1 GB of data
TravelFi’s 1 GB/7-day package costs US$2.61, or about C$3.65 at our illustrative exchange rate. Public Mobile’s selected 1 GB monthly plan costs C$22. For a visitor who only needs data and can stay within 1 GB, TravelFi has the lower upfront package price. Public Mobile also supplies talk and text, so the services are not identical.
A two-week holiday with around 3 GB of data
TravelFi’s 3 GB/15-day package costs US$5.88, approximately C$8.23. Lucky Mobile’s selected C$25 monthly plan includes 4 GB, increasing to 5 GB with Automatic Top-Up, plus calls and texts. TravelFi costs less upfront for the smaller data requirement; Lucky includes more data and a local voice service.
A month of heavy use
TravelFi’s selected 20 GB/30-day package costs about C$35.84 after our illustrative conversion. Public Mobile’s selected C$30 monthly plan provides 35 GB plus talk and text. In this example, the local plan offers more data at a lower base price. If you expect regular streaming, extensive hotspot use or a longer stay, compare local plans before buying.
Why trip length alone does not decide the winner
A light user staying for a month could still find TravelFi’s 5 GB/30-day package economical. A heavy user visiting for only a week could prefer a local monthly bundle. Choose by total cost, expected data use, validity and need for a phone number, rather than assuming every short trip needs unlimited data.
Canada unlimited eSIM options for a 10-day trip
Prefer an allowance that resets each day? Our Canada Unlimited Data eSIM offers 10-day options. Each includes a daily high-speed allowance; after you use it, data continues at a reduced speed until the daily reset. Unlimited does not mean unlimited full-speed data.
| Daily high-speed allowance | Validity | Total price, USD | Illustrative total, CAD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500MB per day | 10 days | US$16.45 | C$23.03 |
| 1GB per day | 10 days | US$24.70 | C$34.58 |
| 2GB per day | 10 days | US$43.15 | C$60.41 |
| 3GB per day | 10 days | US$58.90 | C$82.46 |
Prices above cover the whole 10-day package, not one day. CAD equivalents use the same illustrative US$1 = C$1.40 rate as the fixed-data comparison. Standard options are shown; other allowances and variants with different fair-use speeds are available on the product page. Check the reduced-speed terms for your exact selection.
For example, the 500 MB/day option costs US$16.45 for 10 days, approximately C$23.03. It provides a fresh daily high-speed allowance rather than one freely shared 5 GB balance. The 1 GB/day option costs US$24.70, approximately C$34.58. A local monthly bundle may cost less and include more high-speed data even for a 10-day visit, so choose based on total price, daily usage and whether you need calls or SMS.
Estimate your daily data needs, then compare 10-day unlimited options.
Check these details before buying
- Phone: Confirm it is unlocked and supports your chosen eSIM or physical SIM service.
- Data needs: Maps and messaging use a different budget from video streaming, cloud backups or laptop tethering. Download offline maps and disable unnecessary background uploads.
- Coverage: Check the actual route, especially for remote roads and parks. No option guarantees a signal everywhere in Canada.
- Calls and SMS: Internet calling apps need data, but they do not replace a Canadian number for every service or verification requirement.
- Home line: On a compatible dual-SIM phone, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable automatic data switching where available. Keeping your home line active may still incur your home carrier’s call, SMS or roaming charges.
- Full trip cost: Add any top-ups or renewals needed to cover your entire stay, plus taxes, conversion and setup costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is a TravelFi eSIM cheaper than a Canadian prepaid SIM?
It can be for light data use, especially on a short visit. Our selected small fixed-data packages cost less upfront than the local monthly examples above. Local plans can be better value for larger allowances and include voice features that these TravelFi packages do not.
Can I get a Canadian number with these TravelFi plans?
No. The Canada plans compared here are data-only. Choose a local plan with voice and SMS if a Canadian mobile number is essential.
Do Canadian prepaid providers offer eSIM?
Yes. Public Mobile, Lucky Mobile and Koodo advertise eSIM options. Availability, device support, activation requirements and promotions should be checked directly.
Should I buy an unlimited eSIM for a short trip?
Only if its allowance and total price fit your needs. A small fixed-data package can cost less. Compare daily high-speed allowances and reduced-speed terms before choosing.
Can I set up my Canada eSIM before I land?
Yes. Buy and install it before departure over a stable internet connection, then follow the activation instructions. With correct settings and supported coverage, you can connect after arrival without visiting a SIM kiosk. The Canada Unlimited Data eSIM starts its validity on its first supported network connection in Canada.
How do I choose a 10-day unlimited option?
Estimate your daily use with our Data Usage Calculator. Compare the daily high-speed allowance, reduced speed and total 10-day price. Fixed-data packages can be cheaper if your overall use is modest.
What if I am moving to Canada?
A small travel eSIM can provide arrival data while you arrange your longer-term service. For ongoing use, compare local prepaid plans based on your province, coverage, monthly data and Canadian-number requirements.
Choose the plan that fits your visit
For a short holiday with modest data needs, start with TravelFi Canada fixed-data plans. For a longer stay, high data demand or a Canadian number, compare the local options above. Plan the rest of your route with our Canada Travel Guide.

TravelFi package prices and availability were checked against our live Shopify catalog on October 22, 2026. Canadian examples were checked on the providers’ official pages below. CAD equivalents are illustrations calculated at US$1 = C$1.40 and rounded to two decimals; they are not a live currency quote. No loyalty rewards, referral credits or TravelFi discounts are included. Data allowances and voice features differ, so the examples compare purchase choices rather than identical services.
