Malta is small enough to tempt you into seeing everything, but the best trips leave room between the sights. Valletta's harbour views, Mdina's limestone lanes, Gozo's slower pace and Comino's clear water make very different days. Treat Malta, Gozo and Comino as connected islands rather than one continuous city, and build your route around transport, heat and sea conditions.

This guide is designed for a first visit: where to stay, how to group the main stops, what needs advance planning and how to stay connected without making mobile data the centre of your holiday.

How many days do you need in Malta?

Three days can cover Valletta, a harbour-side outing and Mdina with Rabat. Five days gives you space for Gozo or a coastal day. Seven days works better if you want both Gozo and Comino, beaches and a few unscheduled hours. These are planning suggestions, not a checklist: a shorter trip with fewer transfers often feels more rewarding.

A useful rule is to choose one main area per day. On the map, a temple, harbour and beach may look close together; in practice, waiting for buses, navigating traffic or changing boats can consume the afternoon.

Where to stay: choose a base for your trip

  • Valletta: best for a culture-first city break, historic surroundings and access to the main bus terminus. Check steps, gradients and the luggage route to your accommodation.
  • Sliema: a practical urban seafront base with accommodation, restaurants and harbour connections. It is not a substitute for a quiet sandy-beach resort.
  • St Julian's: suits dining, hotels and nightlife. If sleep matters more than late nights, check your hotel's exact relationship to Paceville.
  • Mellieħa: useful for a northern beach-focused stay and travel towards Ċirkewwa. The village and waterfront accommodation areas are not all at the same level.
  • Victoria, Gozo: a central base for an overnight island stay. Book under Gozo carefully: Rabat is also the name of a separate town on Malta.

For a first visit, one Malta base plus one or two nights on Gozo is often easier than repeatedly changing hotels. Mdina, Rabat, Birgu and Marsaxlokk also deserve time even when you are not staying there.

Nine experiences to build your trip around

1. Valletta and St John's Co-Cathedral

Start with a walk through Valletta before choosing your paid indoor visits. St John's Co-Cathedral is a strong anchor for an art-and-history day: its decorated interior rewards more time than a quick doorway photograph. Use the official cathedral website for tickets, opening notices and visitor requirements. Do not assume normal sightseeing access during services or special events.

2. Upper Barrakka Gardens and the harbour

Use Upper Barrakka as an orientation stop, then decide whether to continue down towards the waterfront or spend longer in the capital. The view makes the relationship between Valletta and the Three Cities much clearer. A harbour crossing followed by a walk in Birgu gives the day a different rhythm from another museum visit.

3. Blue Lagoon on Comino

Comino is a boat outing, not an extension of a city walking route. Under the current visitor system, people landing at the Blue Lagoon must reserve through the official booking process. Read the Malta Tourism Authority guidance and follow its booking link before buying transport. A boat ticket and a landing reservation are separate things unless the operator explicitly arranges both.

Keep this day movable. Check wind, the operator's return arrangements and what happens if sailing is cancelled. Take water and sun protection, travel light, and follow local swimming guidance. Clear water does not remove the need to assess conditions.

4. Mdina and neighbouring Rabat

Pair Mdina's fortified lanes and bastion views with time in Rabat. This is a good day to slow down: start early, choose one or two heritage stops and leave room for a café break. Respect residential streets and avoid scheduling the whole visit in the hottest part of a summer day.

5. Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra

These prehistoric sites add a different layer to Malta beyond the harbour cities. Treat the archaeological park as an outdoor-and-indoor visit, with time for the path between the temples. The Heritage Malta park page is the place to check tickets and access details. Bring water and choose footwear for exposed walking rather than a city-only outfit.

6. The Blue Grotto coast

The land viewpoint and a boat trip are different experiences. Enjoy the coastal scenery even if the sea makes a boat outing unsuitable, and avoid planning a tight onward connection around an activity that may not operate. This area can pair with a southern heritage day if you allow for the journey between stops.

7. Victoria and Cittadella on Gozo

On Gozo, begin with Victoria and the Cittadella rather than trying to circle the island immediately. Explore the fortified lanes and views, adding museums or the cathedral according to your interests. Visit Gozo's Cittadella guide explains the different visitor sites. An overnight stay makes it easier to enjoy the area after the day-trip rush.

8. Marsaxlokk harbour

Colourful boats and the waterfront make Marsaxlokk an enjoyable slower outing. Walk first, then choose where to eat. If you add another southern stop, check the actual connection instead of assuming there is a direct service between every nearby attraction.

9. Golden Bay

Leave a real beach window in the itinerary rather than squeezing swimming between appointments. Golden Bay offers a sandy-coast contrast to the harbour towns. Follow the day's flags and lifeguard advice, and plan your return journey before staying for sunset.

A flexible five-day Malta itinerary

Day Main plan Keep flexible
1 Valletta, St John's Co-Cathedral and Upper Barrakka Choose one main museum or indoor visit, not every possible stop.
2 Mdina and Rabat Add a countryside walk only if the weather and energy allow.
3 Gozo: Victoria and Cittadella Consider an overnight stay instead of adding distant stops.
4 Comino and Blue Lagoon, with the required reservation Swap with another day if sea conditions disrupt boats.
5 Choose the southern temples and coast, or a relaxed beach day Do not force both into a rushed departure day.

With a week, add Birgu and the Three Cities, a longer Gozo stay or a second coastal day. For deeper archaeology, consider Ġgantija on Gozo. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum needs especially early booking; check age, footwear and accessibility requirements before reserving.

Getting around without overplanning

Use Malta Public Transport and the tallinja app for current bus planning. Airport services have their own routes and conditions, so check the service for your actual accommodation area rather than relying on an old route number from a blog.

For Gozo, check which port your ticket uses and arrange the journey beyond the arrival terminal. Gozo Highspeed publishes passenger-ferry information and service notices. Keep extra time for sea-related changes. If hiring a car, review local driving requirements, parking and accommodation access before deciding it will save time.

Best time to visit and what to pack

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for a sightseeing-focused trip. Summer is hot and busy: put exposed walks early, keep water with you and plan an indoor or shaded middle-of-day break. Winter can work well for culture and quieter towns, but boat plans need more flexibility. See the Maltese Islands climate overview and check the current forecast for your dates.

Pack walking shoes with grip, light layers, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Bring a rain layer outside settled summer conditions. A beach outfit alone is not suitable for churches, archaeological walks or every boat outing.

Practical information and staying connected

Malta uses the euro; Maltese and English are official languages. Electricity is 230 V / 50 Hz with UK-style Type G plugs. A plug adapter changes the connection, not the voltage: read your device label before plugging it in. Check official entry guidance for your nationality, passport and itinerary, rather than assuming the same requirements apply to every traveller.

Mobile data is useful for bus journeys, ferry notices, reservations and changing plans. Download maps and save booking confirmations offline as a backup. For a Malta-only trip, compare the Malta fixed-data eSIM with the Malta unlimited-data eSIM. For a wider itinerary, the Europe fixed-data plan and Europe unlimited plan include Malta in their current coverage lists; check every other country on your route too.

Choose fixed data when a set allowance suits your use, or an unlimited option when you prefer its daily structure. Unlimited plans still have a daily high-speed allowance and reduced-speed terms. Check device compatibility, carrier unlock status, activation timing and hotspot terms on the selected plan. As an editorial planning estimate, 5–10 GB can suit a week of maps, messaging and ordinary browsing; video and tethering can require substantially more.

Malta travel FAQs

Can I visit Malta without renting a car?

Yes, many first-visit routes can be built around walking, buses and ferries. Choose your accommodation for those connections and leave time between areas.

Is Gozo worth staying overnight?

An overnight stay is a good option when you want a slower island day and less pressure around the return ferry. A day trip also works if you limit the number of stops.

Do I need to book Blue Lagoon?

Yes, under the current landing-reservation system. Confirm the official requirement and your boat operator's arrangements before travelling; do not assume transport automatically includes the reservation.

Are Blue Lagoon and Blue Grotto the same place?

No. Blue Lagoon is on Comino; Blue Grotto is a different coastal outing near Qrendi on Malta. They require separate transport planning.

Which Malta plan should I choose?

Match data volume, trip length and fair-use terms to your actual usage. For multi-country travel, check regional coverage before choosing a Europe plan instead of a Malta-only option.
