Latin America
Andean cities, coffee landscapes and Caribbean coast — plan your route by region
Colombia rewards a route built around a few contrasting places: Bogotá’s museums and highland streets, Medellín’s neighbourhood culture, Salento’s coffee landscapes and Cartagena’s Caribbean setting. Choose two or three regions for a first trip, then leave room for transfers and changing weather.
This guide brings together practical planning, city and attraction highlights, seasonal advice and mobile connectivity. For the wider picture, see our Latin America travel guide.
Choose Colombia for a mix of culture, food, coffee country and Caribbean scenery. A city-and-coffee route feels very different from a coastal holiday. Ten to fourteen days is a useful starting point for two or three bases; with only a week, concentrate on one region or two well-connected stops.
Colombia’s weather depends strongly on altitude and location. Bogotá can feel cool while Cartagena is hot and humid on the same day. There is no single national beach or hiking season.
Use Colombia Travel’s climate overview and IDEAM forecasts for your actual route. Christmas, Easter and major festivals can affect availability, so check dates before booking.
Allow two to four days for the capital. Group museums, cafés and historic streets by neighbourhood rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Monserrate offers an elevated perspective over Bogotá; check the official transport information and the separate walking-trail guidance before choosing how to ascend. Start gently at altitude and keep a flexible sightseeing day.

Allow two to four days for a city stay. Choose a community-led visit to Comuna 13 to understand local history and creative culture, rather than treating residents’ streets as a photo set. See the official tourism guide’s community tourism information. Build journeys around reputable transport and ask your accommodation about suitable routes and current conditions.

Reserve two to four days for the walled centre, Getsemaní and a relaxed food-and-history itinerary. Walk early or late to reduce exposure to midday heat. The old city and nearby island excursions are different experiences: confirm the operator, complete price, return arrangements and sea conditions before a boat trip. Consult official Cartagena heritage information.

Use Salento as a base for a coffee-farm visit and the Cocora Valley, with time for wet trails and unhurried town exploring. Compare the route, walking demands and local access arrangements before setting out; a short palm-viewpoint walk and a longer mountain circuit are not interchangeable. Pereira and Armenia are useful gateways, but include the onward transfer to your accommodation. Read the official Western Andes overview.

Access update, checked 23 October 2026: Tayrona is closed to visitors from 19 October to 2 November 2026 for scheduled conservation. See the official closure notice and recheck opening and sector access before booking.
Santa Marta is a gateway for the surrounding coast and Tayrona National Natural Park. Check the park authority’s current access, closure and visitor requirements before booking. Conservation closures and operational restrictions can affect visits. Respect designated trails, Indigenous guidance and swimming restrictions; attractive water does not mean a beach is safe for swimming.

Choose Cali when music and dance are part of the trip you want. Arrange a beginner class or a performance with a reputable venue, and organize transport for the return journey. Two or three days can suit a focused city stay. Explore the official Cali guide and confirm local conditions before adding excursions beyond the city.

Pereira can work as an arrival point or a base for the surrounding Coffee Region. Choose accommodation around the actual farm visits or towns you want to see: flying into Pereira does not remove the onward journey to Salento. Read official Pereira information and compare transfers before deciding whether to stay in the city or countryside.
Consider Barranquilla for Caribbean city culture and the Gran Malecón riverfront. A short stay can focus on food, public spaces and local culture. If travelling for Carnival, confirm the current dates, venue arrangements and transport before booking; an event visit needs more preparation than an ordinary stop.
The cobbled Plaza Mayor and surrounding streets suit an overnight or two-day break rather than a rushed detour. Check the actual road time from Bogotá and wear shoes appropriate for uneven paving. Use official Villa de Leyva information to choose any additional regional visits.

San Andrés adds Caribbean water and beach time, but it is a flight-based extension rather than an overland stop on the mainland. Allow roughly three to five days if the connections fit. Check the current island visitor-card requirements, marine conditions and responsible excursion operators. Confirm mobile coverage for your exact island stay; country-level eSIM coverage does not guarantee signal at every beach or offshore.

These are editorial route suggestions, not transport schedules. Compare door-to-door times before purchasing flights and protect the day before your international departure.
Compare domestic flights for distant regions. Mountain roads can make apparently short distances slow; choose reputable operators and check current route advice. Arrange airport transport through authorized services or your accommodation, and avoid street-hailed taxis. Carry some Colombian pesos (COP) in smaller notes and keep a backup payment method separately. Confirm whether tours include transport, meals, park entry and insurance.
Check official entry information for your passport and consult the relevant consulate or immigration authority. Canadian passport holders should also review the Government of Canada advice, including the Colombia entry fee and payment process. Requirements and fees can change.
Review the advisory’s route-specific restrictions before travelling. Protect valuables, avoid demonstrations and use reputable transfers. Seek itinerary-specific travel-health advice for altitude, tropical areas and remote activities, including yellow-fever guidance appropriate to your route. Consult CDC’s Colombia travel-health information and a qualified travel-health provider before departure. Colombia’s general emergency number is 123; ask your accommodation how to reach local help.
Colombia uses Type A/B plugs and a supply commonly described as 110–120 V, 60 Hz. Check your accommodation and each charger’s input label. A plug adapter changes the fit, not the voltage. See our power travel guide.
For a Colombia-only trip, compare Colombia fixed-data eSIMs and Colombia unlimited data eSIMs. Install before departure using reliable Wi-Fi, follow the plan’s activation instructions and have mobile data ready for your arrival transfer.
For a multi-country itinerary, compare the wider South America fixed-data plan or wider regional unlimited option. Both currently list Colombia. The South America six-area plans do not include Colombia. Check every stop against the selected product’s country list.
Start with an estimated 5–15 GB for maps, messaging, bookings and browsing, then adjust for duration and habits using our data usage calculator. Hotspot support is listed on the linked Colombia products. Unlimited options have a selected daily high-speed allowance and reduced speeds after that allowance; they do not promise full speed all day. 5G depends on the selected plan, compatible device and local coverage.
Ten to fourteen days allows two or three contrasting bases. For a week, reduce the route and count transfer days before adding another stop.

Colombia’s climate is shaped more by elevation and region than by season. Caribbean and lowland areas are warm and tropical, Andean cities are cooler, and Amazon regions are hot, humid and rainy.

Rain often increases in parts of the Andes and Coffee Region. Plan indoor alternatives and check trail and road conditions; coastal and island weather follows its own pattern.
Bring a rain shell and shoes suitable for wet streets and trails.
Parts of July–August can be relatively drier in the Andes, while local rain remains possible. June conditions differ by area. Check the forecast for each base and avoid treating the whole country as one weather zone.
Carry layers for changes in altitude, rain protection and sun protection.
Rain can affect mountain and coastal plans. Check park calendars and roads before booking; Amazon, Pacific and Caribbean patterns differ. Tayrona also has scheduled conservation closures.
Keep essential bookings offline, pack rain protection and allow transfer buffers.
A useful starting window for many Caribbean and Andean routes, with hot coastal conditions and cooler highland temperatures. Christmas and New Year can increase demand. These tabs group calendar months; Colombia does not have four uniform climatic seasons.
