Winter Travel Destinations: Snow, Sun, Christmas Markets & Adventure
Winter travel can mean snow-covered mountains, a Christmas market city break, tropical beaches or a summer hiking trip in the Southern Hemisphere. The right destination depends on the experience you want, your dates and how much time you can spend travelling.
This overview focuses on December–March, with late November included for Christmas markets. It is a calendar-based guide for travellers worldwide: these months are winter in much of the Northern Hemisphere, summer in the Southern Hemisphere and part of distinct wet or dry seasons in tropical destinations.
Where to travel in December–March: choose your interest
| Travel interest | Countries to consider | Timing and planning |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights and Arctic experiences | Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland | Dark evenings support aurora viewing, but clear skies and solar activity are essential. Choose several nights. |
| Skiing and mountain villages | Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Japan, Canada | January–March is a useful starting window; resort altitude and local snow conditions matter. |
| Christmas markets and festive cities | Germany, Austria, France, Czechia, Estonia, Latvia, Belgium, Poland | Late November–December; selected markets continue into early January. |
| Beaches, food and nature | Thailand, Mexico, Costa Rica | Match the coast and region to your month rather than relying on a country-wide weather label. |
| Mild-weather island exploring | Spain: Canary Islands | Milder conditions suit coastal walks and outdoor sightseeing; sea temperatures and mountain weather vary. |
| Summer hiking and big landscapes | Argentina and Chile: Patagonia | December–March overlaps the main summer travel season. Wind and rapid weather changes remain possible. |
Snow, Northern Lights and winter landscapes
Finland, Norway and Sweden: choose an Arctic base
Finnish Lapland suits a combination of saunas, snowy forests, guided winter activities and aurora outings. Northern Norway adds coastal scenery around bases such as Tromsø, while Swedish Lapland offers another route into Arctic landscapes. Spend several nights in one area instead of moving daily: weather may interrupt outdoor plans, and a clear evening cannot be booked in advance.
Best for: winter scenery, photography, couples and families who enjoy outdoor activities. December offers a festive atmosphere and very limited daylight in the far north; February–March brings more daytime for exploring. Confirm activity age limits before booking a family trip.

Iceland: geothermal bathing and flexible winter touring
Choose Iceland for hot pools, waterfalls and dramatic landscapes with the possibility of Northern Lights. A Reykjavík base with carefully chosen excursions can be easier than committing to a full winter Ring Road drive. Short daylight, wind and road closures can change a day's route; keep departure-day connections simple and book suitable guided activities where needed.

The Alps, Japan and Canada: skiing with a cultural side
For an Alpine trip, compare Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy. Choose a resort around ability, lessons, lift access and accommodation rather than a famous name alone. A village with good rail links can simplify a holiday without a rental car.
Japan pairs mountain resorts with onsen bathing, regional food and city visits. Hokkaido and Nagano are useful starting areas for research; Canada offers mountain resorts alongside winter city breaks. Neither country has one uniform winter climate. Check actual resort operations before choosing dates.
For Japan, consult JNTO's winter guide. If you want a Canadian city extension, our Québec City itinerary introduces the historic centre; adapt walking time and outdoor stops to winter conditions.
Christmas markets and festive city breaks
Christmas markets are most useful as the centre of a short city break. Vienna offers several different market settings; Nuremberg suits traditional market atmosphere; Strasbourg brings Alsatian streets and seasonal displays; Tallinn and Riga combine compact old towns with Baltic food and crafts.
Choose one city for three or four nights, or two well-connected cities for a longer trip. A market may close on 24 December even when the surrounding holiday season continues. Snow is never a requirement—or a guarantee.

Beaches, wildlife and milder-weather trips
Thailand: Bangkok, food and the Andaman coast
Thailand works well for a city-and-beach holiday. Combine Bangkok with one coastal base around Phuket or Krabi rather than changing islands every other day. December–February overlaps the cooler season in much of the country, while the Andaman coast generally has a favourable travel window from November to April. Gulf-coast islands have different rainfall patterns.
Best for: food, temples, beaches and trips of roughly 10–14 days. Read our Thailand guide and Bangkok destination guide. Check Thailand's official coastal season advice for your chosen area.
Mexico and Costa Rica: culture or forest-to-beach journeys
In Mexico, choose a focused route: Mexico City and nearby cultural visits, or a Yucatán trip with Maya sites, cenotes and Caribbean beaches. Highland evenings can feel very different from coastal afternoons. Our Mexico guide helps compare regions.
Costa Rica suits wildlife, hot springs and a Pacific beach stay. Mid-December–April is generally the Pacific dry season; the Caribbean coast follows different rainfall patterns. For a 10–14-day trip, two or three bases usually allow more enjoyment than a long checklist of national parks.

Spain's Canary Islands: mild weather and volcanic landscapes
The Canary Islands suit travellers who want coastal walks, volcanic scenery and outdoor meals in a milder climate. Pick an island around your interests: beaches, walking routes and accommodation styles differ. Coastal sunshine does not describe mountain conditions, and mild air does not guarantee warm swimming water.

Southern Hemisphere summer: Argentina and Chile
December–March opens a very different kind of trip in Patagonia: long days, mountain walks, glacier visits and major outdoor routes. In Argentina, El Calafate and El Chaltén are useful bases to research; in Chile, Torres del Paine is a major hiking destination. Build the route around transport and available accommodation before adding cross-border extensions.
Summer still brings strong wind and cold spells. Reserve the relevant trek arrangements early and leave flexibility for weather. This is a summer adventure during the December–March travel window, rather than a snow-holiday recommendation.

How to choose and prepare
- Choose the experience first: auroras, skiing, markets, beaches and hiking need different dates and equipment.
- Allow realistic travel time: a long-haul flight or remote transfer can dominate a short break, wherever you start.
- Compare total costs: include transfers, activities, equipment, park fees and holiday-period demand.
- Check local conditions: daylight, rain, altitude and coastal exposure matter more than the word “winter”.
- Verify entry requirements: use the rules for your passport and transit route.
Stay connected along your route
Use mobile data for maps, train information, translation and booking messages. For a multi-country European trip, compare the Europe regional eSIM and European destination plans, checking that every country on your route is included. A single-country trip may suit a destination-specific plan such as our Finland eSIM.
Check device compatibility, validity, activation terms and any fair-use policy before purchase. Download maps and tickets for offline use: mountain areas and remote roads may have limited coverage. Use our data calculator and installation guide to prepare.
Winter destination FAQs
Does winter travel always mean snow?
No. This guide uses December–March as its travel window. It includes northern winter, tropical seasonal trips and Southern Hemisphere summer.
Where should I go for Northern Lights?
Northern Finland, Norway and Sweden, plus suitable areas of Iceland, are useful starting points. Plan several nights and activities you will enjoy even if cloud prevents sightings.
Which destinations suit a short break?
A single Christmas market city or nearby ski resort can work well when travel connections are short. Choose based on your departure point rather than assuming one destination is convenient for everyone.
Is January too late for Christmas markets?
Many close in December. Some continue into early January, so check the exact event and year before booking.
Can one eSIM cover several countries?
A regional plan can cover multiple destinations when each is explicitly included in its coverage list. Check the specific plan, duration and data allowance against your route.
Ready to choose? Follow the country guides above, then compare an eSIM for your destination and travel dates.
